How to Analyze Crypto Orderbook Depth

Read Level 2 orderbook data to identify support, resistance, and liquidity patterns in crypto markets.

Quick Summary

Orderbook depth shows where buyers and sellers are positioned — revealing support, resistance, and liquidity patterns that price charts alone cannot show.

What Orderbook Depth Reveals

An orderbook shows all resting buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) at each price level. The depth — the total size of orders at each level — reveals where market participants expect support and resistance.

A thick cluster of bid orders below the current price suggests strong buying interest that could prevent the price from falling through that level. Conversely, thick asks above the price suggest selling pressure that could cap rallies.

Identifying Key Levels

Large resting orders at specific price levels often act as magnets or barriers. In crypto markets, these levels can shift quickly as market makers adjust their positions.

Watch for: thick bid walls that repeatedly absorb selling pressure (potential support), large ask walls that cap price advances (potential resistance), and sudden removal of large orders (potential signal of directional intent).

Monitoring the Trades Feed

The orderbook shows intent; the trades feed shows execution. Watching individual fills in real time reveals the pace of buying vs selling pressure. Large single-fill trades (block trades) can signal institutional activity.

The combination of orderbook depth and trade flow gives you a complete picture of market microstructure — where orders are resting and where they are being filled.

Liquidation Events

In crypto perpetual futures, liquidations occur when a trader's margin is insufficient to maintain their position. Large liquidation cascades create forced buying or selling that can accelerate price moves.

Monitoring liquidation events in real time helps you understand whether a sharp move is driven by organic buying/selling or by forced position closure — which has different implications for whether the move will continue or reverse.
